- My Science News Explores story about conserving parasites won a 2024 AAAS/Kavli Award for Science Journalism.
- My 2020 story about whale falls won a 2021 AAAS / Kavli Award for Science Journalism (Silver, Writing for Children).
- My Washington Post article about symptom monitoring was a finalist for a 2020 NASW Science in Society award.
- The first episode of Calculated, my podcast collection of stories at the intersection of math and culture, won the 2019 Missouri Review Miller Audio Prize for Audio Documentary.
- Math Art: Truth, Beauty, and Equations was published in April 2019 by Sterling. It highlights the work of artists who are inspired by math to create.
- In 2017, I was honored to receive the Bricker Award for Science Writing in Medicine from Houston Methodist. The award is named after David Bricker, a beloved and skilled science writer who died of cancer. A video of my talk is available here.
- In 2015, Where will Lightning Strike?, which I wrote for Science News for Students, won a Kavli / AAAS Science Journalism Award.
- Interrupting Cancer’s Travel Plans, an article I wrote for Cancer Today, won a 2013 ASJA award in the trade category.
- The Science Writers’ Handbook, a book to which I am proud to have contributed, was published in April 2014.
